Gandhi full name was Mohan Das Karamchand Ghandhi.He was the ideological leaderof India during Indian Independence Movement. His philosophy mainly firms on NON-VIOLENCE(Ahimsa) and PACIFISM(Santhi) and NON CO-OPERATION and used his philosophies as great weapons during the Independence movement against British rule.He led Indians in protesting British rule by Salt Satyagrah Movement and Quit India Movement. He lived modestly in a self sufficient residential community and wear the traditional Indian Dhoti and Shawl.
Gandhi is referred as MAHATMA(In sanskrit, Mahatma means Great Soul) an honorific first applied by Ravindranath Tagore,a Great Poet and popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi.
He is also called as Bapu(In Gujarat Language, Bapu means Father). The Indian government offically honoured him as Father of the Nation.
His birthday 2 October is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanthi and on 15 June 2007,United Nation General Assembly(UNO) declared World wide this day as International Day of Non-Violence.
